The Role
This role supports the Risk leadership team to plan and coordinate the deliverables of the Risk Function, own the maintenance and development of the risk management framework, and support Aspen to manage strategic risks. This will cover systemic risks across established risk categories (i.e., underwriting, reserving, market, credit, and operational risks; and the dependencies between them) as well as the specifics of new emerging risks.
Key Accountabilities
Strategy and Planning
- Coordinate the development of the Combined Oversight Plan, drawing on input from the Insurance, Financial and Operational Risk teams, and working with Compliance and Internal Audit.
- Develop a plan for maintaining the risk management framework, including annual policy reviews.
- Plan delivery of Board and Committee reporting, and communicate key milestones and deadlines throughout the Risk team
- Lead the work to review and update the Group Emerging Risk register, engaging with subject matter experts on the monitoring and management of emerging risks
- Lead the assessment of strategic risks which may affect more than one risk category (i.e. underwriting, reserving, market, credit, and operational risks), leveraging scenario analysis where relevant.
- Lead Aspen’s ORSA process and the delivery of the Group and entity ORSA reports ensuring they remain up to date for changes to Aspen’s risk profile and emerging regulatory expectations.
- Support the Group CRO to coordinate the Group Risk & Capital Committee, organising agendas and papers and to deliver Board and Risk Committee reporting, coordinating the efforts of the team and conducting first review.
- Aggregate risk data and synthesize key risk themes for reporting to senior management, risk governance forums and Board level Committees.
- Assist Risk Management leadership with preparation of materials for rating agencies and regulators on Aspen’s Risk Management Framework and key risks.
- Maintain Aspen’s risk appetite, limits and key risk indicator framework and oversee and coordinate the annual review of Aspen’s Risk Policy framework.
- Oversee and lead the delivery of the Risk elements of the Combined Oversight Plan, including delivering strategic risk reviews.
Technical Performance
- Keep abreast of regulatory developments in Aspen’s key jurisdictions that relate to the risk management framework
- Keep abreast of evolving best practice for risk management and how it can be applied at Aspen to improve risk outcomes.
- Proactively conduct research, across relevant industry, economic, and academic resources, to support the assessment of new or emerging risks.
Skills & Experience
- Insurance / reinsurance experience is essential
- Solid understanding of risk management
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage multiple deliverables to competing deadlines.
- Ability to manage upwards, communicating proactively, providing solutions to potential problems and ensuring work is aligned with the goals of the Risk Function.
- Attention to detail in following up tasks and preparing written output
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to develop and sustain relationships at all levels.
- Delivery focused, with high energy and drive, and ability coordinate the efforts of others.
- Sound commercial judgment, able to understand complex processes and structural issues with capacity to go into detail, draw connections, explain succinctly and act decisively and quickly.
- Innovative and able to drive change in order to simplify and strengthen processes and procedures.
- Relevant experience, within the general insurance industry.
- Bachelor’s Degree, with recognised professional qualifications preferred.
- Experience of working with senior stakeholders and other assurance functions.
- Industry acumen, including knowledge of business operations, finance, risk, as well as a working understanding of the actuarial aspects.
